About Al Reem Island
Set in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai, the natural island of Al Reem lies roughly 600 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi Island. The Abu Dhabi government announced plans for it in late 2004, and the first major sales phase opened to foreign buyers in 2006. Development was divided between several master developers, among them Tamouh Investments, Sorouh Real Estate (merged into Aldar Properties in 2013) and Al Reem Investments, and the island is now a dense district of residential towers with offices, schools and waterfront promenades. Its main districts include Shams Abu Dhabi, Marina Square and Najmat. Since April 2023 the island has been part of the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) jurisdiction. It mostly appeals to professionals and families who want apartment living close to neighbouring Al Maryah Island, to which it is linked by road bridges.
Road bridges join Al Reem Island to Al Maryah Island and to the Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, and the Umm Yifeenah Bridge, opened in February 2023, provides a direct highway link to mainland Abu Dhabi. Many everyday services are on the island itself. Reem Mall opened in May 2024, Reem Central Park offers a city beach and a canal walk, and Reem Hospital has been operating since 2020. For families, Repton School Abu Dhabi - Fry Campus and the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi campus are both nearby, Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi is about 1 km away and GEMS World Academy - Abu Dhabi about 2 km away. Several nurseries, including Primrose British Nursery and Redwood Montessori Nursery, operate on the island, alongside cafés and casual restaurants at street level.

Island Life on Al Reem
A lot of daily leisure on Al Reem Island happens outdoors by the water. Reem Central Park, opened by Aldar in December 2018, is free to enter and pairs a city beach with a canal walk and a mosque for around 2,000 worshippers. Reem Mall, which opened in 2024, adds a large indoor shopping centre, and the Makers District sits on the waterfront. Casual places to eat are nearby, from PizzaExpress to independent spots such as Seeds&Stories and Agate Kitchen. Al Reem Island is largely an apartment market built around high-rise towers, with more than 100 towers completed by 2021, plus Reem Hills, a villa development by Modon Holding. The official UAE government portal lists Reem among the nine areas of Abu Dhabi where foreigners are allowed to own real estate, and the Sun and Sky towers in Shams Abu Dhabi were among the first in the emirate to sell freehold flats to non-Emirati buyers. Since January 2025 property registration on the island has been handled by the ADGM Registration Authority.
