About Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai is the Emaar-built district around the Burj Khalifa, covering about two square kilometres bounded by Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Road, with Business Bay along its southern edge. Before 2000 the land was known as Umm Al Tarif. It now gathers several of the city's landmarks in one district: the 828-metre Burj Khalifa; the Dubai Mall; the Dubai Fountain on the Burj Khalifa Lake; and the 2,000-seat Dubai Opera. High-rise towers dominate the district, while the Old Town quarter keeps to a low-rise Arabic style, and hotels include Address Downtown and Vida Downtown. Downtown Dubai suits buyers and tenants who want to live at the centre of things, near offices, restaurants and culture, and who are happy to share the streets with the crowds that gather for events like the New Year's Eve fireworks.
Downtown Dubai has its own metro stop. The Red Line's Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall stop stands just south of the junction of Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Road, and since 2012 a walkway has connected it directly to the Dubai Mall. The 3.5 km Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard loops around the district and is lined with restaurants, cafés and outdoor art. For young families, Blossom Downtown Nursery Dubai and Kids Zone Souk Al Bahar are within walking distance, and Toddler Town British Nursery is nearby. Souk Al Bahar, beside the fountain, packs in more than 100 shops and upwards of 20 places to eat and drink, and casual spots such as Al Kanafanje and Peet's Coffee are within walking distance of the centre. Drivers join Sheikh Zayed Road directly from the district's edge.
